OTAMESHI CAFE

coffee cup

The other day, I was watching TV news and heard a
new word 'Otameshi Cafe'.  'Otameshi' means 'Trial'.

Trial Cafe?  What is that

cafe_1

It is a cafe with something you can 'try' and have a
cup of coffee or light meal.

First, they introduced a cafe opened in April
in Shinjuku.  The name of the cafe is "chair cafe".

When you enter this cafe, there are only tables, no chairs!
Then you find a good rang of chairs displayed near the wall.

You can try any chairs and choose the one you feel comfortable
to sit on.  Then order your drink, have a nice break.
If you really like the chair, you can purchase it!

There are some interesting designs such as antiques in 1930's and
the other one is transparent so it looks you are floating in the air!

Next cafe is "ATIC" in Omotesando.
You will find price tags on tables or even lightings.
It must feel like you are having a cup of tea in a hardware store.

The last shop on TV was called "Architect Cafe".
This is very interesting.  It's like a large showroom
with living area, kitchen, Tatami room, study room,
bathroom, and even has a meeting room.
There is a food court in the middle of those showrooms.

You can use the meeting room for real meetings,
and in a bathroom, you can have a foot-bath.

Any goods in the showroom such as computers and
kitchen items are all for sale.

Matsuri & Ennichi

Ennichi_Yomise

A day of special significance for a particular shrine or temple.
A Matsuri (festival) or service is held on Ennichi (Fair Day).

Because they attract large crowds, stalls selling food, toys and
good-luck charms (omamori) line the approaches.

Some stalls open in the evening, and in summer, when
people walk around in their Yukata (cotton kimono for summer),
there's a very special atmosphere.

Ennnichi_Azabu-JubanEnnichi_Yukata

They are selling all kinds of things to eat such as Okonomiyaki
(Japanese pancakes), Takoyaki (octopus in batter), Yakisoba
(Japanese fried noodles), and candies.

Also they have shooting galleries, quoits, and other games
which both kids and adults can enjoy together.

'Kingyo Sukui' (dipping for goldfish) is one of the most
popular attractions in Ennichi.  You scoop up a goldfish with
a paper ladle and put it into a container.  When the paper
tears, you've had it.  It's pretty hard to do but it's fun.

When you have a chance to go to Matsuri Festival this summer,
why don't you give it a try?

Driving small motorbike (Gentsuki Baiku/Scooter) in Japan

scooter

Expats often ask us if they can ride on a small motorbike with
their International Driver's License.

Because 50cc motorbikes; we call them 'Gentsuki-Bike',
'Gen-chari', or 'Scooter', are so popular in Japan, we have
special license just to ride on those bikes.

Gentsuki=motor-assisted
Chari=bicycle (slang)

Japanese citizen can get this license when they turn 16 years old
(with writing test) or with Japanese ordinary vehicle driver's license,
you can drive up to 50cc motorbikes.

But with International Driver's License,
you can only drive ordinary cars, not 50cc motorbikes.
You must hold two-wheeled motor vehicle International
License to ride even a small motorbike like 50cc
in Japan.  It sounds a bit silly, but that's the law.

*Please check your International Driver's License*
Category A: Motorcycle - only for motorcycles
Category B: Passenger Car - only for ordinary vehicles

But there is a solution.

If you hold an ordinary vehicle driver's license in your country,
bring your license plus International Driver's License
(Category B) to help you start driving ordinary vehicle
straight away.

And when you have time, go to the license office near you,
(if you live in Tokyo: Samezu, Koto or Fuchu License Office)
and switch to Japanese license. You may have to have some
writing test (10 true-false questions) or/and driving test,
depends which country you are from.
Please check here to find out if you need to have those tests or not.

After you get Japanese license, you can start riding on 50cc
motorbike!

Please Note:
*You must have some IDs such as Alien Registration Card to
prove that you live in Japan.
*You must be over 16 years old to ride 50cc motorbikes.
*You must be over 18 years old to drive ordinary cars.

BASIC JAPANESE CONVERSATION 6

There are some special words you should remember
when you are invited to someone's house.

First, when you are entering someone's house,
you should say; 'Ojama shimasu', which  means
'I hope I'm not bothering you.'

(Jama=bother, interruption)

Then, dinner starts.

Before you start eating, you should say;
'Itadaki masu', means 'let's eat'.

After you finish eating, you should say;
'Gochiso-sama deshita', means 'I've enjoyed the meal'.

(Gochiso=treat)

visiting friend's house

After the dinner, you are about to go home.

When you leave, you should say;
'Ojama shimashita'.
Literal translation is 'Sorry to have bothered you',
but it's more like 'Thank you for letting me in your place.'

And when you get home, you should say;
'Tadaima.' - I'm home!

Sacred Fuji, 3,776 meters high, is not only Japan’s
tallest mountain, but has been cherished by the
Japanese since antiquity for its beauty as well.

Mt. Fuji is indeed an appropriate symbol of Japan.
On the border between Shizuoka and Yamanashi
prefectures, its handsome form can be seen from
Tokyo in winter when the air is clear.

Mt. Fuji is a volcano.  Its symmetrical cone was formed
by eruptions repeated over tens of thousands of years.
Although it has been dormant for the past 300 years,
a future eruption is said to be inevitable.

Since ancient times, fear of Mt. Fuji’s eruptions has gone
hand in hand with veneration.
From the middle ages on, belief in Mt. Fuji spread, and
Asama shrines dedicated to the mountain deity were
erected in various regions.  Lodgings were built on the
mountain in the Edo period, and people climbed it with
fellow-members of religious associations.
Thus the tourist practice of climbing Mt. Fuji today
originates in a religious belief.

There’re cabins open in summer, and the average person
can climb Mt. Fuji.  It's a pretty tough climb but there's a
road to the halfway point, and a number of paths from
there to the top, so even a family can make it if they take
their time climbing.  Still the air is thin, so you have to watch
out for altitude sickness.  And summer nights are as cold as
cold as Tokyo in winter with even snow occasionally, so
please make sure to be properly equipped.

Many people climb at night to reverently watch the
sunrise from the summit.  At night the path is a glowing
stream of climbers' flashlights.  If you begin the climb
in the afternoon, nap in a mountain cabin, and then start
walking again before dawn, you reach the top just before
sunrise.

SUDARE are made of thin strips of bamboo strung together.
If you hang them at the windows you can see out well,
but no one can see in.  They also keep out the sun while
letting the breeze blow through.  They are very good for
summer, much better than regular blinds.

Recently they've been selling Sudare made of plastic,
but the bamboo ones are nicer.  You can enjoy the
traditional look too.

You can purchase them from major hardware stores
such as DoitTokyu Hands, or major shopping center like
Ito Yokado and AEON/JUSCO/SATY. (group stores).

tsuyu_frog

Tsuyu- the rainy season is just around corner.
It starts from early June to the middle of July and
it rains or is cloudy almost every day.

Id doesn't rain that hard, but near the end of the
rainy season there's concentrated heavy rain that
sometimes causes great damage.

The continental high-pressure zone located over Japan
during winter blocks the Pacific hight that's the main
air mass in summer.  A front forms where the two highs
meet, and remains about Japan for a long time.

This sesonal rain called 'Baiu Zensen' drops a great deal of
rain over the entire Japanese archipelago, except for Hokkaido.

Things get moldy and food spoils easily.  But if it doesn't rain
enough, there's a risk of summer water shortages, and for
rice cultivation, rain at this season is extremely important.
